One of New Zealand’s Largest Heavy Transport Projects
We are proud to have successfully completed our role in one of the largest and most significant transport projects our team has been involved in, for and alongside Australian company Rex J Andrews Pty Ltd & New Zealand’s Machinery Movers & Tranzcarr Heavy Haulage.
Over a five-month period, four of our dedicated staff were based in Ruakākā with more staff traveling to and from the project when required. They provided piloting services for the safe transportion of the massive turbine components from Marsden Point Wharf to Mercury NZ’s $287 million Kaiwaikawe Wind Farm project site, located approximately 12km northwest of Dargaville.The project involved our pilots to escort72 blades and the tower sections of which make up 12 of NZ largest wind turbines to date, they stand 125 metres tall with 162-metre rotor diameters.
Three nights a week each blade was transported separately during carefully planned overnight movements along local roads and state highways. The blades, stretching to 80 metres in length, were the longest loads ever transported in New Zealand and required a specially designed trailer to transport them safely for the on average seven-hour journey. The other components were being moved five days a week, so we also had an extra three pilots working with Machinery Movers & Tranzcarr Heavy Haulage on these, so each week we had up to seven staff helping with this project. Our size being the largest piloting company in NZ enabled us to be able to provide this many pilots at once.
Projects of this scale rely on teamwork, precision, and of course patience from people on our roads. Our team came across many motorists on route who patiently followed our team’s directions throughout the operation, helping ensure every movement was completed safely and efficiently.
